This interview is a part of the World Environment Day 2020 Interview Series. We welcome views from environmentalists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders on present environmental challenges and request their innovative ideas to find sustainable solutions to solve them.

Name: Mousumi Kalita Sachdeva
Country: India

Mousumi Kalita Sachdeva
Mousumi Kalita Sachdeva
ST: According to you what is
the biggest environmental threat in the world at present?
Mousumi: As per as the present
situation, I can sense that the biggest environmental threat is the extreme
weather conditions and this is linked to many factors which themselves are the
biggest threat to our environment.  Pollutions of all kinds, be it air, land or water
are alarming which may lead to disastrous situation if we fail to control. What
more example do we need than the present picture of crisis in the entire world!
When humans have reached the extremes of exploitation of nature, nature is
bound to react in many ways as we can witness today.

ST: What do you think a common person
can do to help the environment?
Mousumi: It’s all on the common
person who can save the environment now. We as a common person must take the
responsibility of saving the environment as we take the responsibilities of our
families. First and foremost, we must curb our greed to extract viciously
everything from the nature for our satisfaction. We know to waste but not to
save. It’s high time now we learn to save everything right from water, electricity,
fuel and most importantly the flora and fauna. For instance, every Sunday, I
make it a point to plant a sapling which I think if every individual adopts,
the earth would learn to revive again. The streets are littered by the common
person, water bodies are tormented by the common person, we do not learn to
recycle and reuse in spite of knowing everything. If every common person
becomes a responsible being of this earth, the environment will indeed protect
us in return.

ST: What message do you have to
the present and future generations?
Mousumi: The future generation would
walk on the path built by us. We ought to let the nature survive for the future
generation to take care of it. Let us take the responsibility of saving the
environment for the future to taste the wonders of this earth. The present
generation must wake up as the nature has given us enough warnings this year
and stop exploiting her. Its high time we open our eyes and give a jerk to our
senses and realize that when nature is offended, there will be disaster and men
would see the worst without getting a hint of it. The Future generation must
take the present as a seamless example and act right from the beginning to
protect the environment.

ST: What is the significance of ‘World
Environment Day’ at the present time?
Mousumi: I feel sad to see that World
Environment Day remains limited to Facebook and Instagram today. We can read
great posts and quotes on this day rather than people actually acting on the
ground on this day to observe and take steps to safeguard our environment. What
an irony?

At the present time, this day
is actually an alarm to our sleeping brains to wake up and take
responsibilities to spread an awareness to the entire world about the need to
preserve the environment; or the day will not be far when we would see the end
of the human world.
