ITIL or Information Technology Infrastructure Library is an IT
Service Management (ITSM) software framework that dates back to the 1980s. It
was created to standardize, manage, and optimize IT service delivery for
businesses. ITIL seeks to align IT services with business processes for optimal
results – it delineates a service lifecycle model comprising of specific
processes and activities associated with the design, development, delivery, and
support of IT services.
Application of ITIL practices to IT services has numerous
benefits for businesses – reduced cost of both service development and
deployment; increased productivity of IT personnel; enhanced customer
satisfaction; better management metrics of services, and increased flexibility
in adapting services to fit dynamic business requirements.
ITIL Certification is one of the highest
paying IT certifications today!
ITIL certifications are classified into five different levels:
  • Foundation
  • Practitioner
  • Intermediate (Service Lifecycle
    and Service Capability categories)
  • Expert
  • Master
ITIL employs a credit system approach for its certifications –
each certification level comes with a unique set of requirements and credits.
In total, one requires 22 credits to reach the ITIL Expert level
certification.

Why ITIL Certification
Matters?
ITIL certification ensures that an IT professional is aware of
the best industry practices and solutions for any IT Service Management issues.
ITIL practices allow companies to ensure that the delivery of their IT services
is carried out according to a set of well-defined and standard
practices/processes resulting in increased customer satisfaction. To add to
that, organizations and professionals around the world regard ITIL as a common
language in IT, thereby making ITIL and related skills transferable between
organizations.

Reasons to pursue ITIL Foundation Certification
Following are the reasons to pursue ITIL Certification!

1. To acquire a sharper and competent skill set.
As we mentioned earlier, ITIL certifications are broken up into
five different levels, of which the ITIL Foundation certification is the most
popular. It is, after all, the first step to accomplish advanced and competent
ITIL skills.
The ITIL Foundation level focuses on teaching you the key
elements, concepts, and terms used in the ITIL service lifecycle.
The ITIL Practitioner level is designed to teach how to adopt
and adapt to the ITIL framework for everyday business situations.
The ITIL Intermediate level offers a detailed account of the
upgraded methods for efficient ITSM delivery.
The ITIL Expert level encourages the test and practice of ITIL
best practices/processes to help you attain a solid grasp on the complete ITIL
service lifecycle.
The ITIL Master level seeks to validate whatever ITIL knowledge
you have accumulated so far and your ability to successfully apply ITIL
principles/techniques to obtain desired results.
So, with each level, you adopt a more advanced approach to ITIL
and ITSM delivery.

2. To stand out from the crowd.
Apart from helping you learn and acquire the best industry
practices for ITSM, an ITIL certification will also distinguish you from the
crowd of qualified individuals. Since ITIL is a globally recognized and
accredited certification, employers across the world highly value it. So, you
will have the upper hand over your competitors in recruitment scenarios.

3. To be prepared to grab your desired job role.
ITIL certification is a mark of excellence and proficiency in
ITSM, particularly the upper-level courses. Obtaining advanced level ITIL
certifications will not only help you to become a valuable asset of your
company, but it will also allow you to take a pick of your choicest job roles
for promotions. If you are an ITIL certified professional, some companies may
even let you take your pick of job role during the recruitment process
itself.

4. To earn high-paying salary packages.
As we mentioned before, ITIL certification is one of the
highest-paying certifications in the market right now. Not only does it boost
your resume and professional skills, but it also increases your market value –
you get more promising job opportunities with attractive salary packages.
Potential employers are ready to pay high-end salaries to ITIL certified
professionals since they can add value to their organization by effectively
deploying ITIL practices for business processes. Usually, ITIL certified
professionals earn over six figures.

5. To get job opportunities across various industries.
Today, companies across different industries use and are reliant
on IT services. This is where an ITIL certification has the biggest benefit –
you can use your knowledge to deliver ITSM services across various industries
successfully. So, ultimately, there will be plenty of scopes for you to grow in
the job market. You may even get your choice of location along with negotiable
benefits!

Salary trends for ITIL professionals
Much like other professions, the salary of ITIL professionals
depends on the company size, geographic location, work experience, and the
position and job responsibilities. However, according to the Global Knowledge 2016 IT Skills and
Salary Report
, ITIL salaries were 11%
higher than the salary norm. Thus, ITIL certified professionals earn much
higher salaries
as compared to non-ITIL professionals. In India, the average annual salary of ITIL certified professionals
across various IT roles can range anywhere between Rs. 4,50,000 – 9,00,000.
To conclude, obtaining an ITIL certification is an excellent way
to hone and perfect your IT and management skills. Although certifications
aren’t a rock-solid guarantee of excellence, it does offer you a platform to
strengthen and expand your industry knowledge base – it is up to you to make
the most of it. Apart from all the benefits we have mentioned so far, one
significant advantage is that
AXELOS continues to upgrade ITIL over time. So, rest assured, with
ITIL certification, you will be updated on the latest advancements and best
practices in the industry.
