At StartUp Terminal, we believe our diversity is our strength. As International Woman’s Day grows near, we celebrate the achievements of women around the world.
To kick off our celebration, we’ve asked Auckland-based Bex Gold, Founder of The Department of Brands, few questions on her experience achieving success in the field of entrepreneurship, and what advice she has for women entering the workforce today.
Excerpts:
ST: Please tell us briefly about you.
Bex: I make ethical, vegan, cruelty free hair colour and hair care products distributed in mass retailers – because everyone should be able to put something fun and fabulous their shopping basket while grocery shopping!
ST: Who is a woman that inspires you the most and why?
Bex: My mum. She’s strong, kind and not afraid to work hard.
ST: How are you celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day?
Bex: This is actually the birthday of someone very bad that I dated that took everything I had and I had to start again. It’s a reminder to own and control your own life. You can build a great relationship with someone (which I have) but it’s important to remain secure as an individual.
ST: What is the most important message you want to send out to all the women around the world on this occasion?
Bex: Be yourself and set your own path.
ST: What according to you is ‘women empowerment’?
Bex: Being comfortable being an individual. Creating environments where everyone can be who and what they want to be
ST: What would you say are the main challenges facing women at present globally?
Bex: I’m so lucky to have be born into a country and home where I haven’t been challenged by my gender. There is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that everyone can have the life that they want.
