International Women's Day Interview: Sherina Kapany, Founder of sunSTRATEGIC

Name: Sherina Kapany
Age: 35
City: Mumbai, India
Occupation: Founder of sunSTRATEGIC

ST: Please tell us briefly about you.

Sherina Kapany: I come from a background, where I was always encouraged and supported to pursue my dream. And here I am doing exactly what I wished to do. I left for the US on a one-way ticket from Mumbai to study Marketing & Finance at the State University of New York.

After having an illustrious corporate career in US, I decided to return to India in 2012. The idea of giving back to society by empowering women had been on my mind for a long time. Today, I am a proud founder of my firm sunSTRATEGIC. I am working passionately & happily for it and with it.

ST: Who is a woman that inspires you the most and why?

Sherina Kapany: First and foremost, my mother – a woman I look up to every single day. She has taught me how to take charge of my own life and write my own destiny. Apart from her, The Queen Elizabeth and KanganaRanaut are the ones who teach me the same thing and are strong headed women, inspiring millions every day. I also look up to every woman who has stood up for herself, her beliefs and her circumstances.

ST: How are you celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day?

Sherina Kapany: For me, womanhood is celebrated in every passing moment of our lives. In addition to it, this time I will be at the Rotary Club of Mumbai, Worli, and Womens Day event at Facebook India.

ST: What is the most important message you want to send out to all the women around the world on this occasion?

Sherina Kapany: You empower yourself. Surround yourself with people who support you truly and give back to the society in any way you can. It comes back around, multiple folds.

ST: What according to you is ‘women empowerment’?

Sherina Kapany: Women empowerment is not just when women support other women, but also when a woman takes charge of her own power and independence. This happens when a woman decides that no hurdle is big enough to overcome. We are not waiting for anyone to give us a chance, we create chances for ourselves. I would like to appreciate all those men who look at women as their equals. They truly have been raised well.

ST: What would you say are the main challenges facing women at present in India?

Sherina Kapany: Just when a woman is touching sky and pinning up success on her sleeves, the conventional judgements thrown at her are - How can she do well? She must be in bed with someone for her success. If she is independent she is not womanly enough. She is too fast.
These are the stereotypes that exist in every sphere of our society.

ST: Where do you want to see yourself in next 5 years?

Sherina Kapany: Five years from now, I would like to have a division that is completely dedicated to enhance women who are willing to learn but don’t come from fortunate circumstances. I would like to be running a school for the same and help in the growth of as many woman as I can.
