ST: According to you what is
the biggest environmental threat in the world at present?
the biggest environmental threat in the world at present?
Gaurav Tyagi: With an increase in
population day by day, and have limited amounts of resources I think that
scarcity of water is the biggest environmental threat in the world right now.
Water is the most precious resource we have. Increased temperature, droughts,
river drying, and inadequate monsoon for replenishing groundwater has become
one of India’s major water shortage triggers.

ST: What do you think a
common person can do to help the environment?
common person can do to help the environment?
Gaurav Tyagi: Environmental awareness is
an integral part of the movement’s success. By teaching our friends and family
that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable we can begin fixing
the problems that threaten it. Significant attention should be paid to planting
trees. The source of oxygen is primarily a tree. Unfortunately, for commercial
purposes a lot of trees have been cut down. This certainly reduces the amount
of oxygen in the air. Growing more trees means more oxygen.

ST: What message do you have
for the present and future generations?
for the present and future generations?
Gaurav Tyagi: Our economies should become
a prominent part of sustaining our environment and its nature. Not only now but
in the future as well. Nature’s current devastation affects the livelihoods of
the world’s poorest people and is likely to cause growing misery and conflict
in the future. Therefore, re-balancing our society so that children will lead
happier lives in 2050 would greatly help current generations.

ST: What is the significance
of ‘World Environment Day’ at the present time?
of ‘World Environment Day’ at the present time?
Gaurav Tyagi: Every day we read about
environmental degradation and the mismanagement of our natural resources. We
have always been able to wreck the environment on a small scale, or even on a
regional scale. The implication is that transition is likely to be more
profound and pervasive in the future than anything we have experienced until
now. Change to the sea around us, change to the above atmosphere, in turn
leading to change in the world’s climate, which could change the way we live in
the most fundamental way that prospect is a new human-affair element.
