Name: Sally Jones Kapoor

Age: 30

City: Pune
Occupation: Head Coach & Co-founder, MultiFit (India’s fastest
growing functional fitness studio)

ST: Please tell us briefly about you.

Sally: My
name is Sally Jones-Kapoor. I am the co-founder of MultiFit,
India’s largest and fastest growing functional fitness studio. I embarked upon
the fitness journey ever since I was a child and I knew this was my calling. My
journey is akin to a fairy tale. After playing in over 500 netball tournaments,
I also tried my hand at a corporate job but never quite felt satisfied. During
my first visit to India, I instantly fell in love with the country, its people
and culture and decided to make it my home. I intended to create awareness and
build a culture of functional fitness along with my partner, Samir Kapoor and
MultiFit is a manifestation of those values.

ST: Who is a woman that inspires you the most and why?

Sally: My
biggest inspiration has always been my mother. I grew up in a traditional
family but she always encouraged me and my siblings to dream big and do
something good for the society. I give complete credit to her for the way I
have turned out – passionate, ambitious and humble. She inspires me every
single day just by her little acts of kindness. I will always be grateful to
her for teaching me the true values of life.

ST: How are you celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day?

Sally: It
indeed is a co-incidence but I will luckily be spending it with the person who
inspires me the most, my mom. In this fast paced work life, we hardly get time
to spend with our loved ones. I am extremely glad that I get to spend this
special day with the most special person.

ST: What is the most important message you want to send out to all the
women around the world on this occasion?

Sally: I
want every woman to be able to dream big. Nothing is impossible to achieve if
you really really want something. The best part is that women across the world
are setting an example of the extraordinary things that can be achieved with
sheer dedication. I want young girls to know that there always is going to be
enough place for women in every sector; talk about breaking the glass ceiling!

ST: What according to you is ‘women empowerment’?

Sally: When
I see more parents encouraging young girls to finish their education. When I
see women standing up strongly for their peers and themselves. When women are
rocking in every sector. These instances according to me is women empowerment.
Coming into the fitness industry and leaving a mark has always been a great
challenge for girls out there. It used be very hard for families to accept
their girls becoming fitness trainers.
However, I see a major shift in the curve as we see more girls being
fitness driven and wanting to do more. While these are small examples, they
stand significant as we move forward.

ST: What would you say are the main challenges facing women at present
in India?

Sally: There
are a lot of testing things for a woman in India to deal with, but the most
challenging would be to be viewed as an equal, capable, aware, independent
human being. Not as a gender, but as a person. The core of our existence today
is this: We want to be recognized as people, and not assigned gender roles.

ST: Where do you want to see yourself in next 5 years?

Sally: I
aspire to be in a position where I can encourage more women to join us in the
fitness industry. While MultiFit has expanded in 5 cities in India, I hope to
serve in more places, which will give people a platform to showcase their
expertise and accomplish their passion for fitness.
